About BioThane

What is BioThane®?

BioThane® belting is a nylon web which has been coated with thermoplastic polyurethane. This coating provides a tough and abrasion-resistant surface which does not unravel or fray as does uncoated nylon. BioThane® comes in a variety of colors that are used as a trim overlay on bridles and breastplates.

For years BioThane®  with a polyurethane coating has been used in the equine market for tack and harness. That product has performed extremely well, but it did not have the 'look' and 'feel' of leather, which is important in some applications. The Beta Series was developed to satisfy that need. The vinyl coating represents a balance of toughness, softness and low temperature flexibility.

This makes easy care tack!

Equipment made of these materials is very durable and practically maintenance-free. They need no oiling and can be cleaned with water and a little soap for a more thorough job. They do not get stiff in cold weather nor do they dry out in the heat. They are great for rainy, muddy days and do not mildew if kept in a damp place. Plus, there is a minimum of chafing since coated webbing has a very smooth surface.

Adjustment holes can be punched using a leather punch or by using a pointed end on a soldering iron.

Both BioThane® and Beta can be cut with a sharp knife, but care must be taken to seal both the hole and the cut end to keep out moisture. A simple method is to heat a nail or a pop rivet and pass it through the hole or across the cut end a few times. When heating BioThane® or Beta material, be sure to provide effective ventilation to draw away fumes or vapors that could be harmful if inhaled. It is not necessary to heat the material to the point of bubbling or charring. You do not need to burn the material to get it to melt.

To easily adjust your equipment, lubricate the surface with a little drop of oil or soap and it will slip easily against itself and through buckles.

So, if cleaning equipment isn't your idea of spending time with your horse, then why not give this easy care tack a try.
